Architectures

Wireless network Architectures are evolving to cope with more stringent application requirements. Besides an increasing demand for bandwidth, time sensitive and mission critical applications are emerging. Currently these cannot be reliable supported by wireless infrastructure. Cell-free wireless architectures bring wireless transceivers closer to the end-user to increase the likelihood for good reception. This concept can be extended to a very large number of antennas. By spreading a huge number of antennas over the environment, the EM fields in that space can be manipulated on a very fine scale such that for each user a specific field pattern can be generated, that can guarantee performance.

Such novel concepts require to rethink the full communication infrastructure. Within IDLab different expertise domains are combined for this:

  • EM modelling to devise optimal antenna structures and fast calculation of optimal signal parameters for focusing EM fields
  • Opto-electronic hardware design to realize low power and broadband interconnect systems which can provide synchronous radio signals to a huge amount of antennas
  • Network and transmission protocols that guarantee that radio signals are delivered in time at the correct location
