IDLab-MEDIA

IDLab-MEDIA is a multimedia signal processing research team focused on following lines of research:

  • Representation, processing, compression, and interactive delivery of visual content. Our research focus is drastically evolving beyond traditional 2D images or video, such as 360° video, multi-view stereo/3D video, Extended Reality (AR/VR/XR), Light Fields, or holography. A notable example is our own SMoE light field technology, which is closely related to 3D Gaussian Splatting. We study compression approaches under specific constraints or requirements (e.g., low latency, scalability, streamability, interactivity, complexity, etc.).
  • Multimedia forensics. We focus on AI-based methods for the detection of image & video manipulation, tampering or generation (e.g., by generative AI methods). With our research we aim to develop methods that help combat disinformation and/or contribute to safe & trustworthy multimedia ecosystems.
  • Motion-based XR Interactions. Related to the Art & Science Interaction Lab, we perform research on the measurement, analysis and modeling of human motion for interactive and immersive XR applications and experiences (e.g., multi-person XR environments, sports rehabilitation, training & education).
  • AI-based visual understanding. We apply our in-depth knowledge of multi-dimensional image/video coding for specific applications that require advanced understanding of visual content. This ranges from drone-based surveillance of grasslands to devise mowing strategies that increase biodiversity, over analysis and interpretation of novel medical imaging modalities (large wound analysis based on smartphone-captured videos), to automated industrial inspection tasks.

IDLab-MEDIA has 20+ years of research experience in the domains of data compression, image and video coding, 3D computer graphics, immersive environments (VR/XR), and networked multimedia systems, and has a wide range of activities, including

  • fundamental, basic/strategic, and applied research;
  • contract-based research with industrial partners;
  • scientific consultancy for both industrial and governmental partners;
  • standardization (JPEG, MPEG, VQEG).

These activities resulted, a.o., in 90+ articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, 200+ articles in peer-reviewed international scientific conferences (incl. several scientific awards), several patent applications (2 granted), and 1 spin-off company (Graphine Software, acquired by Unity Technologies in 2019).

More detailed information on our activities can be found on our IDLab-MEDIA team website.
