Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

At IDLab’s AI & Robotics Lab (AIRO), we do curiosity-driven research in the interdisciplinary fields of robotics and AI. Our work spans a broad spectrum, from social robotics and fringe energy-efficient machine learning techniques to advanced robotic manipulation. With extensive experience in neural networks, the lab has consistently excelled in international competitions, including winning several times in international Kaggle image recognition challenges and robot manipulation contests.

Our research is interdisciplinary by nature which we perform with a team of more than 30 researchers. For our research, we collaborate with other leading universities, research institutions and industrial partners, at both national and international level. AIRO also prioritizes outreach and innovation, offering companies the opportunity to partner with world-class researchers on research projects that harness the power of robotics and AI to solve real-world challenges.

Furthermore, we see education as a top priority. Consequently, the AIRO Lab is responsible for many courses at bachelor and master level including Machine Learning, Robotics, Intelligent Robot Manipulation, Microcontrollers, Teaching Methods Engineering and Technology, etc. Additionally, we organise multiple bachelor and master research projects.

For a deeper understanding of the fundamental and applied topics we tackle, we invite you to explore our work further at airo.ugent.be or during a lab visit. Or feel free to reach out to one of the PI’s: prof. Francis wyffels, prof. Joni Dambre and prof. Tony Belpaeme.
