Jan Fostier was born in Oudenaarde, Belgium in 1982. He received a Master degree in Engineering Physics in 2005 and a Bachelor degree in Informatics in 2004, both from Ghent University. In 2005, he joined the Electromagnetics research group in the Department of Information Technology (INTEC), where he obtained his Ph.D. degree in 2009. The title of his Ph.D. dissertation was: 'Parallel Techniques for Fast Multipole Methods'. During the course of his Ph.D., he was involved in the development of a highly parallelized electromagnetic solver.

In 2011, he was appointed professor at Ghent University. His research interests include algorithms and high-performance computing techniques for various applications in the domain of bioinformatics. He is also affiliated with imec.
